The new mobile phone application allows users to look up lodging, meals, and incidental rates on iPhone and BlackBerry platforms. The mobile application is free on both platforms, and plans are underway to include an Android application in the immediate future.
The application allows users to search rates by location or zip code. Currently, users can search rates for the federal government fiscal years of 2010 and 2011. Once the user identifies the location they need, the rates display by the current month. Users can scroll through the months of the federal government’s fiscal year, which starts in October and ends in September, to find the rate they need. When fiscal year 2012 rates are released later this summer, users will be able to search those through the app as soon as they are available on our website.
Per diem rates are the federal government’s travel reimbursement rates based on actual and necessary costs defined by law, which authorizes GSA to set rates. GSA sets per diem reimbursement rates based on actual average daily rates charged by mid-priced hotels in a given location. In addition to federal government travelers, many private sector companies, universities, state and local governments, and non-profit associations follow government’s lead and also look to GSA’s per diem rates.
