GSA Auto Auctions Save Taxpayers $2 Million

GSA’s Northwest/Arctic Region Fleet Division has saved taxpayers more than $2 million by increasing outreach to sell vehicles that federal agencies no longer need. The regional Fleet Remarketing team, responsible for selling used vehicle assets, has sold 2,125 vehicles receiving $22.6 million in proceeds this year alone.

Through strategic decision making, authorizing repairs and deciding how and where to sell vehicles, the team spent $125 less per vehicle to sell, and yet received $840 in proceeds on average, with a net gain of $960 more per vehicle compared to 2012.  This calculates to an improvement of over $2 million for this year.

Proceeds from the sales go back into the Fleet fund to purchase new vehicles. The team’s successes — high returns and low costs to sell — contribute significantly in keeping customer lease rates low and reducing customer vehicle leasing costs by 28%, a savings of over $129,000.

The regional Fleet Division also netted more than $2 million in auto auction sales over three days in August. On August 19, the first Internet auction, hosted by Dealers Auto Auction of Anchorage, Alaska, sold 35 cars for proceeds of $400,000, with an average return of $11,451 per vehicle. The second internet auction, hosted by Brashers Cascade Auto Auction in Portland, Oregon, sold 49 vehicles with proceeds of $480,000, and an average of $9,800 per vehicle. The final live auction hosted by Dealers Auto Auction in Nampa, Idaho, offered 100 vehicles with total sales of $1,122,000 for an average of $11,220 per vehicle.

GSA Fleet in Region 10 manages over 18,700 vehicles, including sedans, passenger vans, trucks (light, medium and heavy), buses, ambulances, Alternative Fuel Vehicle and limited types of special purpose vehicles. The Fleet program also maintains vehicle management support for the life cycle of a vehicle, which encompasses vehicle acquisition, asset management, maintenance and repair, fuel, accident management and sale of used vehicles.
