GSA has always made driver safety a priority in motor-vehicle management. With a leasing program of more than 200,000 vehicles, and as a sole supplier of roughly a third of the total federal fleet, we feel that driver education is our responsibility. Vehicle accidents will happen, and while we can’t eliminate all danger on the roads today, we want to do our best to minimize it for federal drivers through our commitment to ongoing driver education.
Our National Fleet Safety program targets driver behavior and attitude behind the wheel — that is why GSA‘s Motor Vehicle Management offers free driver training and why we participate in driver safety campaigns like Drive Safely Work Week.
GSA is proud to support the Drive Safely Work Week this November 4-8. With our partners — the Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, National Safety Council, and even our customer agencies – we hope that sharing messages, stories and encouragement will remind us all to take time to focus on our personal driving responsibility. We’ve used social media to help spread the message about safe driving, and received hundreds of personal pledges made by federal employees to drive without cell phone distraction.
For all of us, it’s important to be aware of what’s out there, making sure our focus is on the road, and to have a leadership attitude behind the wheel.
A leadership attitude means taking personal responsibility for your own actions as well as the actions of those in the vehicles around you. It means recognizing what it takes to drive defensively, being attentive to your surroundings, and being ready to react safely to the unpredictable actions of others, and this is what GSA advocates.
