{"id":134,"date":"2010-03-23T08:09:53","date_gmt":"2010-03-23T12:09:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gsablogs.gsa.gov\/technology\/?p=134"},"modified":"2024-01-11T18:21:01","modified_gmt":"2024-01-11T23:21:01","slug":"customer-engagement-drives-innovation-comsatcom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gsablogs.gsa.gov\/technology\/2010\/03\/23\/customer-engagement-drives-innovation-comsatcom\/","title":{"rendered":"Customer engagement drives innovation &#8211; COMSATCOM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several weeks after Martha Johnson\u2019s swearing in, I find myself continuing to think about the themes she addressed \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gsa.gov\/portal\/content\/104264\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Customer Intimacy, Operational Excellence and Innovation<\/a>.\u00a0In my last entry, I focused primarily on the idea of customer intimacy, which has been at the core of recent ITS initiatives.\u00a0 Furthermore, I firmly believe that engaging the customer and capitalizing on strong professional relationships can drive innovation. As an example, I mentioned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gsa.gov\/fcsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COMSATCOM<\/a>, the partnership with the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) for commercial SATCOM services. I\u2019d like to take a moment to share more about this partnership.<\/p>\n<p>Every year the federal government relies more and more on commercial satellite communications to provide essential, secure communications to disaster recovery teams, domestic emergency responders, and our men and women in the armed forces \u2013 we see the results on the television every day.<\/p>\n<p>As the federal government\u2019s need for commercial satellite communications services increased, both DISA and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gsa.gov\/\">GSA<\/a>\u00a0created various competing contract vehicles to meet the demand. But why manage separate contract vehicles that offer essentially the same services?<\/p>\n<p>Back in July 2009, with multiple contracts expiring by 2012, DISA and GSA joined up to launch the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gsa.gov\/fcsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Future COMSATCOM Services Acquisition<\/a>\u00a0program, an innovative, collaborative solution that would not only replace the expiring contracts but simplify the acquisition process through a blending of IT Schedule 70 and multiple award indefinite delivery\/ indefinite quantity contracts.\u00a0 It would generate significant savings to defense and civilian agencies; state, local and tribal governments and, of course, the taxpayer.<\/p>\n<p>So how did we do it?<\/p>\n<p>It came down to trust and understanding, which can only be achieved through sincere customer engagement, active listening and proactively responding to customers\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n<p>We met with the key players at DISA.
